The Portuguese Society of Geriatrics and Gerontology (SPGG) was founded in 1951 by Dr. José Reis Jr. session held at the Society of Medical Sciences of Lisbon (SCML), chaired by Prof. Coast-Sacadura. Since then, the Portuguese Society of Geriatrics and Gerontology (SPGG) has always been represented until the 1980s by its Founder Dr. José Reis Jr. in all the World Congresses, organized by the International Association of Gerontology, of which Dr. José Reis Jr. was one of the founders and member of its Board of Directors. The current president of the society is Professor Manuel Oliveira Carrageta.
